With the 2026 high school football season set to begin this week, West Allis (Nathan) Hale High School (West Allis, Wisconsin) is experiencing major turmoil with its coaching staff.
\n
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel — part of the USA TODAY Network — "several" coaches were placed on administrative leave while the district conducted a "confidential personnel investigation." Since then, more coaches have resigned, with the season set to kick off on Thursday, Aug. 20.
\n
The Journal Sentinel obtained a letter from principal Matthew Lesar that was shared with football families on Aug. 6.
\n
"We want to inform you that, effective immediately, several members of our football coaching staff have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with District policy while the District conducts a confidential personnel investigation," Lesar said. "Administrative leave is a standard District procedure utilized during certain investigations and should not be interpreted as a finding of wrongdoing or an indication of guilt."
\n
The Journal Sentinel also points out that Lesar indicated that there was no concern about any player's safety or well-being. The matter is personal, so no other details were made public at that time.
\n
Four days later, Lesar wrote a follow-up letter to the football families, which confirmed that "several members" of the coaching staff resigned.
\n
"As we move forward, our focus is on providing stability and continuity for our student-athletes and ensuring they have the support they need for the rest of the season. We are pleased to share that our current defensive coordinator, Coach Cody Schumitsch, will serve as the interim head coach as we begin the search for a permanent head coach," Lesar said. "Coach Schumitsch is a 2015 Nathan Hale graduate/player and has served as an assistant coach for the past several years, bringing valuable experience and familiarity with our student-athletes and Huskies football program."
\n
According to the letter, Lesar said that parents would have a chance to meet with Schumitsch on Wednesday, Aug. 19, two days before Nathan Hale is scheduled to kick off its season by hosting Kaukauna.
\n
Among the resignations was longtime staff member and alumnus Ryan Teetz, who posted his resignation announcement on Facebook, stating, "Unfortunately, I can no longer support this place though."
\n
"With a lot of emotion, I am announcing that I will be stepping away from the Nathan Hale Football program and school as a whole," Teetz wrote. "For the majority of my life, I have been intertwined with the Nathan Hale Football program. Coaching was something I always knew I would eventually do because, quite simply, it is in my blood. My grandfather, parents, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins have all been teachers and/or coaches at some point in their lives. Nathan Hale Football has been a family affair for generations, and that will always be something I am incredibly proud of."
