Why Consistency Is Biggest Key For Kansas State QB Avery Johnson This Season

Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Avery Johnson is entering the most important season of his career.

As a senior, this could be his last chance to compete for a Big 12 championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff. It could also be the final time he has an opportunity to impress NFL scouts.

After a solid sophomore season as the full-time starter, he took somewhat of a step back last year as a junior. Most of that could be attributed to inconsistency.

That's why being consistent is the biggest obstacle facing him this season. It will likely be the difference in the Wildcats finishing as a middle-tier in the conference or competing to play in the CFP.

Last year Johnson had a major issue with up and down play. He started strong with 273 passing yards in a loss to Iowa State in Ireland and followed that by going 28 of 43 for 318 yards and three touchdowns in a win against North Dakota.

He then failed to have 200 passing yards the next three games, ending the skid with 339 yards in a losing effort to the Baylor Bears. Johnson then only topped 200 in one of the final six games.

The bottom line is the Wildcats will have limited success when Johnson is under the 200-yard mark. That's going to leave too much pressure on the running game and the defense. While Johnson is a proven runner, the Wildcats are going to need his arm to remain competitive in the tough Big 12 conference

KLEIN MAKES ANOTHER OFFER

With less than a month until Kansas State football returns, the program is still game planning for the future.

It offered another 2028 class player on Monday morning. It was another tight end prospect, this time three-star Brady Reeves. He currently attends Hill-Murray High School in Maplewood, MN. Reeves also received offers from Vanderbilt, Iowa State, and Miami (OH). He's ranked right outside the top 20 at his position on 247Sports. Last season, Reeves had 25 receptions for 327 yards and nine touchdowns.
