Illinois Football Announces 2026 Team Captains

The Illinois Fighting Illini have become a team to watch on the Big Ten and national landscape ahead of the 2026 college football season and much is due to the leadership of head coach Bret Bielema.

Bielema has cemented the Fighting Illini as winning Big Ten program and he's done it through with the support and leadership of a player group that continues to gain new talent with each passing year.

On Wednesday, Bielema and the Fighting Illini named the team's 2026 football captains, a list that includes four returnees and two transfers, both of whom have previously played for other Big Ten programs.

Offense Lands Four Players Among Team Captains

The Fighting Illini offense led the way with four of the six captain selections, including one wide receiver, one offensive lineman, one quarterback and one running back.

The team's second-leading receiver from 2025 and top returning receiver, Collin Dixon, was listed among the captains according to the team's official X page.

Dixon had 35 catches for 548 yards and five touchdowns last season, ranking behind the team's leading receiver Hank Beatty (now with the Tennessee Titans) in receptions and yards while besting him in touchdowns.

Running back Aidan Laughery was also selected as a captain after rushing for 400 yards and three touchdowns on five yards per carry last season.

He is expected to form a two-headed monster in the backfield alongside Ca'Lil Valentine, a fellow returnee.

Wisconsin offensive lineman Jake Renfro(57) provides pass protection during the second quarter of their game against Miami (Ohio) Thursday, August 28, 2025 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin.

Projected starting center Jake Renfro, who transferred from the Wisconsin Badgers this offseason, was also named as one of the six captains.

Renfro has played in 37 games across five seasons with the Badgers and Cincinnati Bearcats and will look to stabilize and offensive line that could be the key to Bielema's team's offense this season.

Quarterback Katin Houser rounds out the list after transferring in from East Carolina this offseason by way of Michigan State University.

Houser had a career-best 3,300 passing yards last season along with 19 touchdowns for the Pirates. He had 1,130 passing yards as a redshirt freshman with the Spartans in 2023.

Defense Lands Two Captains for 2026

The Fighting Illini defense saw two players named captains, defensive backs Matthew Bailey and Xavier Scott

Bailey broke the news to his mother Michelle in a call with coach Bielema, revealing his excitement over the prestigious honor.

Bailey has played all four college seasons with Illinois and has 185 tackles to his name along with 11 pass break-ups.

Scott is also heading into his fifth season in Champaign and has recorded six interceptions along with 127 career tackles.

He missed the final 10 games of last season after undergoing surgery on his right foot and ankle but is back and ready to lead new defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck's unit.

The Fighting Illini have a long list of talented and experienced players among their team leaders this season, making them a team to watch going forward.

If the Illini captains play to their potential, another winning season seems like a smart bet for coach Bielema and his team.
