The Michigan Wolverines’ football program will be down a talented true freshman for the entire 2026 season.

During his press conference on Friday afternoon, head coach Kyle Whittingham announced to the local media in attendance that true freshman offensive lineman Ace Hamilton has suffered a season-ending lower leg injury during fall camp and will miss all of 2026.

“We had a freshman lineman get a lower leg injury that’s going to hold him out,” Whittingham said. “Ace Hamilton will be out for the year, so that one is unfortunate. Very unfortunate.”

Hamilton was a three-star recruit in the 2026 class, listed as the No. 628 overall prospect on the Rivals Industry Ranking. The 6-foot-2, 288-pounder from St. John’s in Washington, D.C. was originally committed to Virginia Tech, but flipped to the Wolverines and signed his letter of intent during the early signing period in December. He was a three-time All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference selection in 2023 (honorable mention), 2024 (second team) and 2025 (first team).

The timing is particularly unfortunate given how much buzz Hamilton had generated since arriving on campus. Coaches and players alike had been singing his praises this offseason, with the kind of early enthusiasm typically reserved for players who arrive clearly ahead of schedule.

Michigan offensive lineman Blake Frazier was among those who spoke highly of Hamilton earlier this month.

“Ace Hamilton is going to be a guy,” Michigan offensive lineman Blake Frazier told 247Sports’ Sam Webb earlier this month. “He came in, and it was like, this dude can play.

“You see with young guys, sometimes they come in, and you’re going against guys that have been in college two, three, four years, whatever, and sometimes you see guys a little bit unsure of themselves. And (Hamilton) just kind of came in and knew he could hoop, and that’s what he did. … That’s what raises your eyebrows to it a little bit as you’re like, dang, this dude didn’t take a step back or anything. He doesn’t take any buffer period to get his confidence back. He’s just rolling.”

The silver lining, if there is one, is Hamilton will have the opportunity to use his freshman season as a “redshirt” year to learn as much as he possibly can while rehabbing from his injury. Given the talent and maturity he has already demonstrated in a short time, there is every reason to believe he will be a meaningful contributor for Michigan’s offensive line in the years ahead.

For now, though, offensive line coach Jim Harding and the rest of the staff will need to adjust the depth chart accordingly before the Sept. 5 season opener against Western Michigan. Hamilton’s absence creates an opportunity for other young offensive linemen to step up, but it is impossible not to feel bad for a player as young as Hamilton who will now spend his first college season sidelined.
