Matt Campbell understands the expectations waiting for him at Penn State.
During a Friday appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, the Nittany Lions’ new head coach described seeing Beaver Stadium late at night with the lights shining over the venue’s ongoing expansion.
"I look at the lights on every night in this stadium and it's so special..

“I would be remiss to say, man, at 10:30-11:00 at night and you look at this expansion and the lights on in the stadium. ‘Look at this place. Look how special it is to play in one of the great places to play college football.’ We are really fortunate to do it. I am excited for the opportunity, but I am more excited to give ur fanbase and this university a team that can represent the history of this place the right way.”
Campbell called Penn State “one of the great places to play college football” and said he feels fortunate to lead the program. However, his most important message focused on building a team capable of representing the university’s proud history.
That should immediately catch the attention of Penn State fans. Campbell enters his first season in Happy Valley with an opportunity to establish a new culture. He is not interested in ignoring the program’s past or starting over completely. Instead, he wants to build upon the foundation already in place.
James Franklin did a respectable job of maintaining Penn State’s national relevance. The Nittany Lions consistently competed near the top of the Big Ten and remained involved in the College Football Playoff conversation.
Campbell’s challenge is taking the next step.
Representing Penn State’s history “the right way” cannot simply mean producing winning seasons. At a program with this much tradition, support, and access to resources, the ultimate standard must be competing for Big Ten and national championships every season.
