Where UCLA Football Can Finish in Big Ten Standings

There's a lot of promise for Bob Chesney as he enters his first season with the Bruins, but realistic expectations have to be set.
We recently projected the Bruins' record based on their schedule, but with that in mind, where will it land them in the conference rankings?
The Big Ten is arguably the toughest conference in football right now, and there are plenty of juggernauts the Bruins will have to compete with in the conference standings.
If everything clicks for the Bruins, how high up can they finish? On the contrary, how far can they fall if struggles arise during the season?
Giants in the Big Ten
Being realistic, the Bruins aren't winning the conference this season; let's get that out of the way. In fact, I think it would be a long shot to believe that UCLA can finish in the top five.
Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana, Michigan, and Penn State are all a tier above the Bruins at this point. Then you have USC, Iowa, and Washington in a tier below them and still more likely to finish higher than UCLA.
It just goes to show how many quality teams are in this conference, and how much of an uphill battle it will be for Chesney and the Bruins.
What Their Schedule Says About Their Potential
Luckily, UCLA doesn't play too many of the teams we mentioned above. Oregon, Michigan, and USC are the three on the Bruins' schedule, and if everything goes right, those could be the only three losses for UCLA this season.
To compare that to last season, a 9-3 record with a bowl-game win (the projected ceiling) would have tied the Bruins for fourth place with four other teams. However, I believe the most likely record is 6-6 with a bowl-game win, which would have led to a tied-10th-place finish last season.
To me, that seems much more realistic. A 6-6 regular season with a bowl win would be a successful year one for Bob Chesney by most standards. It would certainly be an improvement over the 3-9 team we saw last season, and progress is all Bruins fans can ask for at this moment.
The Big Ten is not easy. It will be an uphill battle for these Bruins every week inside this conference. Don't be mistaken; UCLA is trending upward, and their overall schedule is favorable to what they want to accomplish in year one under Chesney.
