Penn State's new quarterback, Rocco Becht, has gotten off to a really good start in the final fall camp of his career.
Much was made of the graduate transfer's comments the other day about his class load, or lack thereof, and the point is that as a graduate transfer, someone who has already graduated, he has a light load of classes and can focus on football.
Well, it is paying dividends because his coach is absolutely gushing over him.
On Friday, head coach Matt Campbell spoke with the media and was asked about Becht's training camp so far, and he spoke very highly of his quarterback
He said, "He has played at an elite level every day. He has had great command of situational football; he has had great command of what we are trying to get accomplished offensively. The biggest thing that a great quarterback does is he leads the team. If the entire locker room is willing to fight for the quarterback, then you have a pretty special leader on your hands."
Year five for this marriage between Becht and Campbell, and they are in a brand new place trying to lead a brand new program.
Rocco Becht is playing at an "elite clip," says Matt Campbell

No one has really talked about this element of the new look Nittany Lions, but their quarterback and head coach are going to experience environments that they have never been in against teams they have never played against.
Becht's first game inside Beaver Stadium will be the biggest environment that he has ever been in. The same goes for when he plays at Michigan, and the environment that he experiences when he plays against USC in the White Out will be something totally foreign to him.
It is like playing a true freshman quarterback, but one who has the experience of a senior. It's an awesome combination to have because there will be zero concern about his ability to respond to adversity and zero concern about any setting being too big for him.
While Becht brings a lot to the table, including a ton of experience, he does need to elevate his game. He has been in a steady decline since his sophomore year, which was outstanding.
The completion percentage has trickled down, the yards have decreased, as well as the touchdowns, while the interceptions have ticked up.
For Penn State next year and for his coach who is trying to get off on the right foot for their entire new fanbase, he needs to be really good.
He will get three games to warm up, and then when Big Ten play comes around, he needs to be clicking on all cylinders.
He is definitely off on the right foot but he has to keep stacking those days. His coach is going to demand that each and everyday.
