It always interesting to hear how coaches react to a player leaving the program, and it has been quite the ride the last few days for both Notre Dame and LSU.
Now former Irish defensive lineman Junior Tuihalamaka was granted another year of eligibility, and head coach Marcus Freeman detailed why a reunion wasn’t in the cards. It mainly had to due with the timing of the announcement, as Notre Dame had already started its fall semester and it would have been tough for Tuihalamaka to success in the classroom.
Not every program prioritizes the education part of being a football player, and that looks to be the case for LSU. Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin spoke on Monday about the addition of Tuihalamaka. While poster Mike Scarborough thought his comments “had a little bite,” after listening to the full quote, it really didn’t seem like it.
He’d pretty much reiterate what Freeman said, as the school academic calendar makes it difficult for Tuihalamaka to be in South Bend, but the rules at LSU are slightly different. Graduate school began on Monday, which you’d think would give the Tigers a bit more wiggle room than the Irish. However, that isn’t the case as Notre Dame also started on Aug. 24th, but orientation and advising did begin early last week which was after the ruling took place.
That could have been the biggest factor for the Irish not being able to add Tuihalamaka to its roster, and it’s an unfortunate one. Maybe the two teams will see each other on the field during the College Football Playoff, as they aren’t scheduled to see each other in the regular season.
Lane Kiffin was asked about Marcus Freeman’s comments after former Notre Dame EDGE Junior Tuihalamaka landed at LSU.
Kiffin’s response had a little bite. 👀
“If you can’t get him in for admissions, then I would probably say the same thing.”
