UNLV needed a new quarterback for the 2026 season. UNLV lost quarterback Anthony Colandrea to the transfer portal, leading to the need for a new QB1. The team brought in former Oklahoma and Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold to compete with Alex Orji for the starting job.
Now, UNLV coach Dan Mullen has made a decision, per Pete Nakos of On3.
“UNLV head coach Dan Mullen plans to play both Jackson Arnold and Alex Orji on Saturday night against Memphis, he announced,” Nakos posted on X, formerly Twitter.

While Mullen noted that both will play, he did not say who will get the first snaps. Arnold is attempting to resurrect his career. Arnold was a four-star recruit out of high school, while being named Gatorade Football Player of the Year in 2022. He chose to attend Oklahoma. He played in seven games with one start in his freshman season. He was named the starter for the 2024 season, but after struggling was benched in favor of freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. This led to Arnold transferring to Auburn, where he passed for 1,309 yards and six touchdowns. With a new coaching staff coming in, Arnold transferred again to UNLV.
Meanwhile, Alex Orji began his career at Michigan, primarily as a backup in 2022 and 2023. He would start three games while playing 11 in 2024 for the Wolverines, primarily being used in running situations. He then decided to transfer, moving to UNLV. Last year, he played in three games with one start for UNLV. In that time, he was three for three for 37 yards while running for 42 yards and a touchdown. A hamstring injury ended Orji’s season at UNLV after just three games.
