Who is Georgia football's No. 2 QB behind Gunner Stockton? What Kirby Smart said

Nobody on Georgia football perhaps has more of a lock on a starting job than quarterback Gunner Stockton.

The competition for the backup job behind him tightened in the spring with Ryan Puglisi getting a push from Ryan Montgomery.

So where do things stand now after two preseason scrimmages and with Georgia’s season opener looming Sept. 5 against Tennessee State?

"You know, that battle is not over," Smart said on Wednesday Aug. 25. "It's one of those things that we'll continue to just see and, you know, inevitably like to see it play out in live action. But is that live action through us or is that live action through a game? I don't know if we'll get a chance to do that but we have chances every day for them to in critical, crucial two-minute drives, third down competitions."

Neither stood out in Georgia’s two-hour plus practice on Aug. 9 that was open for Glory Glory subscribers.

Puglisi threw 3 interceptions in Saturday’s closed scrimmage, according to UGASports, while Montgomery led the second team offense on at least two touchdown drives.

Both have taken first-team reps.

"You know, they've both had their good, they both had their bad, and they continue to get better," Smart said.

Smart said after the G-Day game when second-year player Hezekiah Millender threw for 103 yards that “I don’t know that any of the three of them were so consistent to say, ‘Well, he’s the clear 2,’ or he’s the clear this. It just wasn’t that way.

Stockton has taken less practice reps than he did last year, Smart has said, which has helped develop the others including freshman Bryson Beaver.

Puglisi, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound third-year player from Paxton Mass., completed 16 of 27 passes for 161 yards with a touchdown and 2 interceptions last season in seven games.

Montgomery, a 6-3, 215-pound second year player from Findlay, Ohio, saw action in just one game, completing one pass for 12 yards.

Smart said Millender has gotten better and Beaver is a "guy that we fight every day to try to get more reps so he continue to grow."
