The Duke football team hopes for another successful season, after winning the ACC championship in 2025. Duke is now naming a starting quarterback for the team’s 2026 opener.
“Sources: Defending ACC champion Duke has named San Jose State transfer Walker Eget the school’s starting quarterback, and he’ll debut against Tulane on Sept. 5. He beat out highly regarded redshirt freshman Dan Mahn for the starter role,” ESPN’s Pete Thamel posted to X, formerly Twitter.
Eget has a lot of experience. The Duke football team will hope to rely on that experience to win games.

“A native of Santa Clarita, California, Eget joined the Blue Devils in February as a transfer after being a five-year member of the football program at San Jose State (2021-22-23-24-25). He played in 27 career games with 18 starts and earned 2025 Honorable Mention All-Mountain West accolades. He has completed 421-of-730 (.577) passes for 5,563 yards with 30 touchdowns. In addition, he has rushed 64 times for 181 yards (2.83) to compile 5,744 yards of total offense,” the Duke football program said in a release.
Duke lost quarterback Darian Mensah to another ACC school, following the 2025 season. Mensah transferred to Miami (FL), who reached the College Football Playoff national title game for the 2025 season.
Mensah spent one season at Duke. He led the Blue Devils to the ACC title game, where they defeated Virginia. Duke fans hope that Eget is able to replicate that success.
The Blue Devils are led by head coach Manny Diaz. Diaz is about to enter his third season at the helm. He has posted back-to-back 9-win seasons at Duke, and is already turning that program into an ACC power.
Duke football plays Tulane to open their 2026 season. That game is scheduled for September 5.
