The Penn State Nittany Lions have seen a decent number of their players drafted over the last three seasons, with 21 total players selected by various teams.

But despite being the smallest class of the three years, the 2025 draft class featured Tyler Warren and Adbul Carter, along with a few other notable names down the board into Day 2 and 3. But one of their five draft picks was recently traded.

According to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix Sports, former Penn State standout safety Jaylen Reed was just traded by the Houston Texans to the New England Patriots for former LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte.

"Trade! The Patriots are sending WR Kayshon Boutte to the Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick, sources tell @ringer @netflixsports," Pelissero reports.

This is an interesting trade for the NFL, and from the Penn State perspective, it's odd that one of their five draft picks from the 2025 class was already traded.

But for Reed, this is actually a great opportunity. The Texans' defense was elite, but he wasn't likely to see much playing time at all this upcoming season.

Now, he heads to the Patriots, whose depth chart is very questionable after Kevin Byard and Craig Woodson. Penn State fans might actually get to see Reed take the field for many meaningful snaps this upcoming season in the NFL.

He recorded 181 tackles in 50 games at Penn State from 2021 through 2024. Reed also had 3.5 sacks, three passes defended, one forced fumble,  and 12.5 tackles for loss and five interceptions, including a pick-six, during his time at Penn State.

Boutte played three seasons at LSU, totaling 1,781 yards and 16 touchdowns on 131 receptions in 27 games played for the Tigers. But he never crossed paths with Reed or Penn State, though they did face one another this past NFL season.

They're now swapping rosters, with Reed leaving the Texans behind just a year after being drafted by them for a much better opportunity for playing time.

While getting to Pro Bowl status like Warren might be hard in 2026, Reed's opportunity is huge with the Patriots, and Penn State fans should be ecstatic that the former star safety has joined a Super Bowl contender with a chance to play a lot this upcoming season.
