Oregon has spent decades looking like a program capable of winning a national championship. Bleacher Report believes the wait finally will end in 2026.
The Ducks were selected to win the first national title in program history in Bleacher Report’s eight hot takes for the 2026 college football season.
Oregon has come close before.
The Ducks reached the national championship game under Chip Kelly during the 2010 season but lost to Auburn on a last-second field goal. They returned four years later under Mark Helfrich before suffering a 42-20 loss to Ohio State. Dan Lanning has returned Oregon to the sport’s elite tier. Now the Ducks must turn their talent, resources and recent momentum into the championship that has repeatedly escaped them.
Dante Moore gives Oregon championship advantage
Quarterback Dante Moore is the central reason Oregon enters the season as a legitimate title contender. Moore passed on an opportunity to enter the NFL Draft and instead returned to lead another championship push. His decision gave Lanning an experienced quarterback with elite physical ability and familiarity with the offense.
The supporting cast could be even more impressive. Oregon enters the season with one of the deepest collections of pass-catchers in college football. Better health at wide receiver should give Moore a variety of options and make the Ducks difficult to defend across the entire field.
The offense will receive most of the national attention, but Bleacher Report identified Oregon’s defense as the foundation of its championship prediction.
The Ducks have built a loaded defensive line and replenished their secondary with more NFL-caliber talent. Lanning’s recruiting success has provided Oregon with the size and depth necessary to compete against the nation’s most physical teams.
That balance separates the Ducks from teams relying almost entirely on quarterback production.
Road trip to Ohio State could define Oregon’s season
Oregon’s path will not be easy. The Ducks must navigate a demanding Big Ten schedule that includes a road game against Ohio State. The Buckeyes enter the season ranked No. 1 and will present Oregon with one of its most difficult regular-season tests.
A loss in Columbus would not necessarily end Oregon’s championship pursuit in the expanded College Football Playoff. A victory could establish the Ducks as the national favorite.
Oregon understands how quickly an outstanding regular season can lose its meaning in the postseason. The Ducks have consistently recruited and performed at an elite level under Lanning, but the program still must finish the job in the playoff.
Moore’s return gives Oregon continuity at the sport’s most important position. Its defensive depth gives the Ducks a chance to survive games when the offense is not operating at its best.
Those qualities become increasingly important during the extended playoff required to win a modern national title.

Dan Lanning can complete Oregon’s rise
Oregon has invested heavily in becoming one of college football’s premier programs. The facilities, recruiting operation and NIL resources already compare favorably with nearly every national contender. Lanning has transformed those advantages into consistent on-field success.
The final step is a championship. Winning it would remove Oregon from the list of prominent programs that have never captured a national title and validate the Ducks’ transformation from regional contender to national power.
The Big Ten will not provide an easy path. Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and other conference opponents will test Oregon before the playoff even begins.
Bleacher Report believes the Ducks have everything necessary to survive that path.
Oregon has an elite quarterback, explosive skill talent, a defense filled with future professional players and a coach who has recruited at the highest level. The Ducks have looked ready before.
The prediction for 2026 is that this time, they finally are.
