Lane Kiffin and LSU have been collecting recently released NFL talent. Tight end Dae’Wuan Wright, who was cut by the Cleveland Browns, is set to join LSU. Meanwhile, Zxavian Harris is also looking to join Kiffin and LSU.
Now, the rules for former pros attempting to return to the college ranks have been made clear, as has the punishment, per Daniel Hager of On3.
The presidents, chancellors, and athletic directors of the SEC met and unanimously decided on the rules.

“Following meetings with the presidents, chancellors, and athletics directors of the Southeastern Conference, the SEC will enforce the following policy: An SEC institution is NOT permitted to have an athlete on its roster who has:
- Previously declared for the NFL, NBA, or WNBA DRAFT, and did not appropriately withdraw,
- Signed a contract with an NFL (or other professional football league), NBA/G-League, or WNBA (or affiliate) team, or
- Been listed on an NFL (or other professional football league), NBA/G-League, or WNBA (or affiliate roster),” the ruling read.
Both Wright and Harris have been listed on an NFL roster, meaning they are not permitted to play. If Kiffin and LSU decide to play the players, the SEC has already determined the punishment. It will be a half-season suspension for the head coach, in this case, Kiffin. SEC voting privileges will be revoked on business matters for the school that violates the rule. The SEC will also impose a fine of 50% of the sport’s annual operating budget. Further, the league is reserving the right to impose other penalties as seen fit.
The SEC joins the Big Ten and Notre Dame in setting up punishments for teams that roster players who were formerly on a professional roster.
