Former Florida State quarterback commits to Texas Tech

Former Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos is set to play for the defending Big 12 champions this season.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Castellanos has committed to Texas Tech. He entered his name into the transfer portal after a Kentucky judge gave him a temporary restraining order on Friday, allowing him to secure a fifth year of eligibility.

Castellanos spent the 2025 season at Florida State as the program’s starting quarterback, finishing with 2,760 yards through the air, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also spent two seasons at Boston College and one at UCF.

He has compiled 6,449 yards through the air, 48 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions in four seasons.

Texas Tech’s quarterback situation

Will Hammond is set to be Texas Tech’s starting quarterback to open the season against Abilene Christian on Sept. 5, but it doesn’t hurt to have someone like Castellanos around. He has a lot of starting experience and is a good insurance policy in case Hammond gets hurt.

Hammond has been Texas Tech’s backup quarterback these past two seasons, compiling 1,151 yards through the air, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Texas Tech won the Big 12 last season and reached the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, finishing 12-2. The program is aiming to win the Big 12 again, but go even further in the CFP.

Kickoff for the Texas Tech-Abilene Christian game will be at 7 p.m. ET on FS1.
