Texas A&M football head coach Mike Elko shows a unique way with words. Including Elko motivating the Aggies by reminding them the school has an empty trophy case. But Thursday’s rant comes amid an “eligibility crisis” as he described.
Elko took to the podium with this head-turning message.
“We’ve got games tonight, games on Saturday, and we’re not even sure about the rules of who’s eligible to play!” Elko said.

But Elko’s statement comes amid a notable headlining moment involving college football. Undrafted NFL players aimed to pivot back to the college game for a fifth year of eligibility ahead of the CFB season. All thanks in large part to a Louisiana judge that helped grant TROs (Temporary Restraining Orders) for players who used it toward the NCAA, all to enter the College Football Transfer Portal.
“It’s a statement about where we are, from a governing standpoint,” Elko added.
Although the SEC looks like its clearing up confusion on roster construction amid this controversial injunction. The conference declared in a news release on Monday that “Individuals who choose to leave college athletics, sign professional playing contracts, and compete professionally should not then be permitted to return to college competition.”
Texas A&M already witnessed LSU aiming to add recent NFL representation. But the SEC’s message disrupted head coach Lane Kiffin’s pursuit of undrafted talent. Kiffin’s former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris rose as contenders to join LSU amid the injunction.
Elko is now navigating in a far different CFB. Even amid the era of conference realignment and NIL. But now the portal game re-entered the picture, leaving him bewildered on if rosters across America are really complete.
