Kansas Football Lands Two Running Backs On Doak Walker Award Watch List

Kansas football's revamped backfield is already receiving national recognition before the 2026 season begins.

Running backs Dylan Edwards and Yasin Willis were both named to the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list, which recognizes candidates for the nation's top running back.

The honor adds to the growing expectations surrounding a Kansas backfield that underwent major changes during the offseason. Rather than relying on one featured back, the Jayhawks are expected to spread carries between multiple players with different skill sets.

Edwards transferred to Kansas from Kansas State after previously beginning his career at Colorado. Across three college seasons, he has rushed for 1,072 yards while averaging 5.8 yards per carry and scoring eight touchdowns.

His speed and ability to contribute as a receiver give Kansas an explosive option who can be used in several different ways within offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki's system.

Willis brings a much different style after transferring from Syracuse. At 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds, he gives the Jayhawks a more physical presence between the tackles and is expected to complement Edwards throughout the season.

The recognition continues a recent trend for Kansas. Former Jayhawk running backs Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw Jr. were also named together to the Doak Walker preseason watch list ahead of the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Kansas could have even more depth behind Edwards and Willis. Colorado State transfer Jalen Dupree is also expected to factor into the rotation once healthy after rushing for more than 500 yards last season.

Head coach Lance Leipold has spoken positively about the group throughout fall camp, praising both its depth and the different running styles available.

With Kansas replacing several major offensive contributors from last season, including quarterback Jalon Daniels, a strong rushing attack could become one of the most important parts of the Jayhawks' offense.

The preseason recognition for Edwards and Willis suggests expectations extend beyond Lawrence as Kansas prepares to unveil its new-look backfield.
