Top Alabama Transfer Delivers Bold Promise Before Season Opener

The Alabama Crimson Tide were very busy in the transfer portal as usual this offseason, and one of their top additions was defensive lineman Devan Thompkins.
Thompkins spent the first four years of his career over at USC and is coming off of a 2025 campaign in which he registered 31 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks, so he brings a good deal of experience and production to Alabama.
“I did four years at USC, graduated over there,” Thompkins said. “I had great times over there. I just feeling like there was something hitting me, something different that I needed. I decided to weigh my options out in the portal, and Alabama came out on top.”
As for what Thompkins plans on bringing to Tuscaloosa?
“Intensity, high-effort guy,” Thompkins said. “Always willing to put myself on the line for the team. I like to say I’m a leader. Just to lead by example and help the other guys. Give them my best every play, just putting my best foot forward. That’s what people can expect from me.”
A four-star transfer, Thompkins' importance to the Crimson Tide increased this week after it was revealed that defensive tackle Jonathan Beaman would miss the entire season as a result of a knee injury.
It was certainly a big loss for an Alabama squad that was counting on Beaman to provide a much-needed boost in the trenches, but Thompkins seems prepared to fill his shoes.
As for what Thompkins' role will be in 2026? The 6-foot-5, 300-pound defender is versatile enough to slide up and down the defensive line, but it seems as if he will mostly be featured on the perimeter this fall.
“I feel like I’m being used outside more,” Thompkins said. “More of an outside presence. When I was at the previous school I was back-and-forth. I’m more of an outside presence now.”
The good news is that Alabama can use him essentially anywhere in the trenches, although Thompkins does seem to be better as a pass rusher than a run stopper.
Whatever the case may be, Thompkins was unquestionably a big-time addition over the winter, and following the Beaman injury, 'Bama is now surely even more thankful that it was able to land the Tracy, Ca. native
