Tua Tagovailoa’s Falcons future rocked by stunning warning as ESPN voice raises alarm

Tua Tagovailoa’s time in Atlanta could be over before it truly begins. An ESPN radio host has warned that the veteran quarterback is playing for his roster spot on Friday night.
Mark Zinno believes Michael Penix Jr. will start Week 1, and that Tagovailoa may not even make the 53-man squad.
It is a stunning turn for a player who signed with the Falcons this off-season after being released by the Miami Dolphins.
Zinno warns Tua is playing for a roster spot
Laying out his thinking on X, Zinno said:
‘My best guess at the #Falcons QB situation is this: Michael Penix will be the starter Week 1. Yes, even without playing in the preseason. The QB “competition” never materialized in the true sense of one, but one thing was clear. Tua didn’t play well enough to win the job.’
He then went a step further.
‘Tua is playing Friday night for a SPOT ON THE ROSTER! I think it’s totally conceivable that he could be cut. Ask yourself, what’s the real difference, in 2026, between Tua, Cooper Rush & Jack Strand? Hard for me to find one.’
Zinno did not stop at the quarterbacks, criticising how the whole situation has been handled.
‘The messaging was awful and the execution was sloppy. But moving past all that, we are here in a spot with Penix likely being your starter in Pittsburgh.’
The context is not kind to Tagovailoa. The Dolphins took him at No. 5 in the 2020 draft, and he played six seasons with the franchise, producing 18,166 passing yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions before being released after a steep decline in performance.
He joined the Falcons on a one-year, $1.215 million deal in March. The signs since have been mixed, with just three completions from five attempts for 22 yards in the pre-season opener against the Broncos.
Friday brings a reunion of sorts, with the Falcons facing the Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in the pre-season finale.
Atlanta have not made the playoffs since 2017, and they have plenty of questions to answer before the new season. Whether Tagovailoa is part of the answer is now genuinely up for debate.
A big night in Miami could change the conversation. Anything less, and Zinno’s warning may prove all too accurate.
