Georgia football schedules 2029 opponent for earlier start date

Georgia football has lined up a future nonconference game for an earlier start date.

The Bulldogs will play Akron on Aug. 25, 2029, according to a game agreement between the two schools obtained by the Athens Banner-Herald Friday in an open records request from Akron. It will be the first game between Georgia and the Mid-American Conference school.

The NCAA announced Friday, Aug. 28, that the Football Oversight Committee adopted proposals that include moving the start of the season to what is now considered Week 0 and ending on the Saturday after Thanksgiving starting in 2027.

Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks chaired a calendar subgroup of the Oversight Committee that worked on modifications.

Georgia is paying Akron a $1.5 million guarantee for the game. FBSchedules.com first reported the Georgia-Akron agreement.

Akron receives 3,000 tickets to sell from Georgia and gets 900 complimentary tickets.

Akron went 5-7 in 2025 in Joe Moorhead’s fourth season. It plays at Wake Forest and Minnesota this season.

Georgia’s 2029 nonconference schedule also has a game at Clemson and at Georgia Tech. Brooks said in May that he was in “talks” with Clemson about the home-and-home scheduled for 2029-2030.
