College football is officially back.
Week 0 kicks off Saturday, Aug. 29, opening the 2026 season and giving fans their first real taste of meaningful football in months. Clemson supporters, however, will have to wait one more week before seeing the Tigers return to the field.
Clemson opens its season Sept. 5 with a trip to Baton Rouge for a highly anticipated rematch against LSU, and the game will immediately put Dabo Swinney’s team under the national spotlight.
It will be the second straight year Clemson and LSU have opened the season against one another. Last year’s meeting took place at Memorial Stadium, while this season’s matchup shifts to Tiger Stadium for what should be one of the loudest and most difficult environments Clemson faces all year.
The first meeting did not end the way Clemson hoped.
The Tigers carried a 10-3 lead into halftime before LSU responded in the second half and escaped with a 17-10 victory. Clemson never really recovered from that opening disappointment, eventually stumbling to a 7-6 finish in one of the most frustrating seasons of Swinney’s tenure.
LSU finished with the exact same 7-6 record, but the program enters this rematch looking much different than it did a year ago.
Brian Kelly is no longer leading the Tigers, and former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin will begin a new era in Baton Rouge. That coaching change adds another major storyline to a matchup that already carried plenty of intrigue after last season’s result.
For Clemson, the trip offers an immediate opportunity to change the conversation.

The Tigers enter 2026 looking to prove that last season was an outlier and that they can quickly return to the national picture. Winning on the road against LSU would go a long way toward doing that, especially with the attention surrounding the matchup.
ABC will carry the game in primetime, and ESPN’s College GameDay will also be in Baton Rouge for the Week 1 showdown. That means Clemson will begin its season with millions watching and very little room to ease into the schedule.
Week 0 officially gets college football started Saturday, but Clemson’s season begins Sept. 5 with exactly the kind of matchup that could set the tone for everything that follows.
