Michigan Football announces non-conference opponent for 2028

The Michigan Football team will play Charlotte for its second game of the 2028 season, it announced on Friday. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9, 2028.
Charlotte is a member of the American Athletic Conference (AAC). It hasnāt been around for long, as the football team played its first season since the mid-1940s in 2013. It had its first winning season in 2019. The 49ers name is a tribute to the year 1949, when the school was saved from closing entirely.
It will be the first time Michigan and Charlotte have faced off on the field, though we know the Wolverines have connections to the team. Previous interim and assistant coach Biff Poggi was the head man for Charlotte from 2023-24.
Overall, the school maintains a losing record, but recently hired Tim Albin away from Ohio. Albin had a lot of success in the MAC and could help get the program in the right direction in the seasons ahead. He went 33-19 at Ohio, but was 23-9 against conference opponents. Unfortunately for him, the success didnāt immediately carry over. He went 1-11 at Charlotte last year, and the team didnāt have a single conference win.
Charlotteās stadium has a capacity of around 15,000 people, so the players, coaches and fans will have a much different experience when they head to Ann Arbor and play in front of more than 100,000 fans.
Michigan will play Charlotte in Ann Arbor in 2028, but thereās a lot of football to be played before then. Weāre all hoping for improvement from Bryce Underwood this season. The Wolverines have a new coaching staff this year that could really help hone some of the talent on the roster, but we wonāt know until they take the field. Michigan kicks off its 2026 regular season on Saturday, Sept. 5 against Western Michigan.
