Helmet stickers from UNC's season-opening football upset of TCU

The UNC football program started a brand new season on Saturday, facing TCU in Ireland for a rematch of both teams' 2025 opener.

North Carolina lost that opener by 34 points behind a lackluster effort on both sides of the football. The Tar Heels made every effort to upgrade their roster this offseason and, on Saturday, those upgrades paid off.

Thanks to shutdown defense and timely offensive plays, UNC upset the Horned Frogs 15-10, leaving plenty people happy and shocked alike.

North Carolina (1-0) opened the scoring just under five minutes in, with LSU transfer Aeron Burrell connecting on his first of two field goals. 25 minutes later, the Tar Heels took a 2-point lead into halftime, keeping pace with every early punch TCU (0-1) threw. After UNC traded several empty second-half drives with the Horned Frogs, quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. drew an offsides penalty to ice the game late.

Edwards ended his North Carolina debut with 232 passing yards on 16 completions, quickly proving himself as a major upgrade from 2025 starter Gio Lopez. The Tar Heels now have a formidable pass-catching duo in Jordan Shipp and Jelani Thurman, who combined for 165 receiving yards. Sophomore running back Jaylen McGill scored the Tar Heels' lone touchdown early, while fellow sophomore Demon June powered the game down late.

Mixed in with top 2025 producers and newcomers, UNC's defense won it the game. Syracuse transfer Derek McDonald was a tackling machine, leading all players with 11. Sophomore defensive lineman Xavier Lewis was the best player on the field, leading everyone with five solo tackles and 4.5 TFLs. Melkart Abou-Jaoude forced a key fumble that led to North Carolina's final points of the day, while the entire unit forced a turnover on downs deep in its own territory late.

Xavier Lewis

On a strong defensive line expected to be amongst UNC's top units in 2026, Jackson shined the brightest on Saturday.

Jackson consistently reached the backfield, generating a game-high 4.5 tackles for loss, highlighted by a 4-yard stuff of TCU star running back Jeremy Payne. Jackson ended his day with five solo tackles, which also led all players.

Jelani Thurman

Thurman, the Ohio State transfer, quickly showed why he'll become North Carolina's TE1 on Saturday afternoon. Thurman generated two big plays within the opening minutes, catching separate 20 and 35-yard passes from Edwards, then finished his day leading the Tar Heels with 94 receiving yards.

Derek McDonald

Whenever UNC tackled a TCU ball-carrier on Saturday, chances are McDonald had his share in that tackle. The Syracuse transfer led North Carolina with 11 total tackles, generating four solo wrap-ups and seven assists.

Billy Edwards Jr.

It's just one game, but Edwards quickly proved himself as the Tar Heels' QB1 on Saturday, throwing for 232 yards and evading pressure in the pocket well. Looking calm and also mixing in play-action passes, Edwards is a massive upgrade from Lopez in 2025.

Jaylen McGill

McGill only carried the football five times on Saturday, but he rushed for 33 yards and scored UNC's lone touchdown. Without McGill, North Carolina doesn't beat TCU.
