MIAMI, Fla. – In the midst of a potential college football return, former Miami Hurricanes linebacker Wesley Bissainthe was released by the Kansas City Chiefs, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter.
The 22-year-old was one of 41 athletes granted a temporary restraining order by a Dallas judge on Thursday. Although all Power Four conferences recently approved new policies that prohibit professionals from returning to compete in college sports, the local courts have ruled otherwise.
It’s unclear whether the Hurricanes would consider bringing Bissainthe back. He played a consistent role in the program’s turnaround. Bissainthe was a four-star top-200 recruit coming from Miami Central High School, graduating in 2022. He received several Power Four scholarships, including from Florida, Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Oregon, and Texas, but chose “The U” over several options.
Bissainthe played an immediate role on the Hurricanes’ defensive unit. In all four years on the team, he appeared in at least 11 games. Bissainthe’s role expanded season after season, but as a senior in 2025 is when a breakthrough fully came together. He logged 71 total tackles, 39 solos and 32 assists, three tackles for loss, a sack, and a 32-yard interception against Stanford in 16 games (15 starts).
The Miami native helped the Hurricanes towards a historic-best 13-3 record and a trip to the National Championship game.
Bissainthe’s lone sack came in the fourth quarter of the Cotton Bowl quarterfinals against Ohio State. He blitzed through the offensive line without any resistance; Buckeyes running back Bo Jackson couldn’t secure the block, and quarterback Julian Sayin was brought down.
In this year’s NFL Draft, Bissainthe went undrafted, then signed with the Chiefs. He was making a push for the team’s practice squad until the NCAA changed its eligibility rules to age-based in late June. It paved the way for several athletes who were supposed to turn pro to seek another season of college sports.
The Hurricanes currently have 115 players on the roster. Although room for Bissainthe doesn’t appear to be trouble, a reunion is currently unlikely. The best option for him would be to enter the transfer portal and seek opportunities elsewhere.
Although the college football season has officially kicked off, several Power Four teams have yet to play a game. In any situation, Bissainthe has a long journey of catching up to do. Teams are always looking to add talent and a veteran linebacker will soon be available on the market.
