Former TCU safety Jacob Fields arrested on aggravated assault charge after allegedly punching teammate

Former TCU safety Jacob Fields was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He turned himself in to police in Tarrant County, Texas on Sunday morning, On3’s Brett McMurphy reported.

A senior transfer from Louisiana Tech, Fields was dismissed from the Horned Frogs program on Aug. 18 after a locker-room altercation during which he allegedly punched sophomore receiver Dozie Ezukanma.

Fields is being held at the Tarrant County Jail in Fort Worth, Texas after turning himself in, according to his agent. Philip Miller told ESPN that his client is expected to be released on bond later on Sunday.

The incident in question occurred on Aug. 13. Ezukanma alleged in an Instagram video that Fields “sucker punched” him, causing his head to hit the floor and knocking him unconscious. He said Fields also kicked him in the head, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

A TCU football staffer reported the incident to campus police the next day, according to an official report.

Ezukanma did not travel with the team to Dublin, Ireland, where the Horned Frogs lost to North Carolina 15-10 on Saturday.

TCU head coach Sonny Dykes addressed the incident during a press conference on Thursday,

“It was something that was certainly out of character for the team and the young man that was involved,” Dykes said, via the Star-Telegram. “Look, you got 110 football players. I mean, things happen sometimes. You’ve got to find ways to move through them, and, man, these young kids are resilient.”

“It’s like anything else, when something bad happens, it becomes a teaching moment,” he added. “And so we were able to teach out players, and I think the guys are better off from having gone through it.”

A source told Star-Telegram reporter Steven Johnson that tensions had been developing in the locker room, but there were no attempts by coaches to de-escalate the situation despite being made aware of what was happening. Dykes reportedly did not realize how serious the issues were among players, according to the source.

TCU subsequently pulled the newspaper’s credentials to cover the football program after the locker room altercation was reported. An athletic department spokesman said the credentials were being revoked because of alleged threats made to Ezukanma, according to the Star-Telegram,
