Florida, Jon Sumrall Learn New Update on 4-Star WR Target

The 2026 college football season is about to begin for the Florida Gators and first-year head coach Jon Sumrall. After a long offseason, fans are about to have meaningful football back on their TV's.

For the Gators, the upcoming campaign is an important one.

Over the last few years, the program has fallen from being a contender in the SEC. Under former head coach Billy Napier, the fan base grew incredibly frustrated with the product that was placed on the field. Sumrall was hired to fix the problems.

Sumrall has a great track record of success as a college football head coach. He began his head coaching career at Troy, where he coached for two years and ended up with a 23-4 overall record. During his two years at Tulane, he led the Green Wave to a 20-8 record and a College Football Playoff berth last season.

Heading into his tenure as the lead man for Florida, Sumrall has been working hard to improve the roster.

While he has already added quite a few players to the current roster and has focused on leading the Gators back to being a force in the recruiting world, there is a lot more work to do.

On Tuesday afternoon, Florida and Sumrall received a positive update about one of their wide receiver targets in the 2028 recruiting class. According to a report from Rivals insider Hayes Fawcett, the Gators have landed inside of Malachi Lee's top 12 finalists.

Standing in at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, the Loudoun Sports Academy standout from Leesburg, Virginia is currently ranked as the No. 9 wide receiver in the 2028 class. He is also ranked as the No. 67 overall player in the nation and the No. 2 recruit from the state of Virginia.

In order to land a commitment from Lee, Florida will need to beat out quite a few other high-profile programs. The other teams in the top 12 are Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Nebraska, USC, Texas A&M, Rutgers, Miami, Virginia Tech, UCLA, and Arizona State.

Only time will tell whether or not Sumrall and the Gators are able to land Lee's commitment. For now, it's a very positive update that shows Florida as a strong contender to win the battle.

Expect to hear more updates in the near future. Being able to lock in a commitment from Lee would be another nice step in the right direction for Sumrall and the Gators' program.
