On Saturday afternoon, the Alabama Crimson Tide are set to open the 2026 season inside of Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium against the East Carolina Pirates.
A long-time member of the American Conference, East Carolina comes to Tuscaloosa off a 9-4 season that saw the Pirates record their highest win total since joining the league back in 2014. The Pirates also won the Military Bowl in 2025 for the second-straight season, continuing the program's upward trajectory under head coach Blake Harrell.
East Carolina however now kicks off their 2026 season on the road in Tuscaloosa where the Pirates are considered as a heavy underdog against the Crimson Tide. Do the Pirates have what it takes to make things interesting against Alabama on Saturday afternoon?

Blake Harrell enters his second full season as head coach at East Carolina, as well as third overall after taking over in 2024 midseason. Harrell owns a combined 14-5 overall record as head coach of the Pirates, and is joined this fall by a pair of new coordinators in Jordan Davis and Jordon Hankins on offense and defense, respectively.

East Carolina's names to know offensively likely start at the quarterback position in Mitch Griffis, as well as Emory Williams, a pair of transfers from Texas Tech and Miami, respectively, who are both likely to play Saturday. Brock Spalding is arguably East Carolina's top returning offensive player at wide receiver, while running back will feature two transfers in Ashton Gray and Michael Allen from North Texas and Marshall, respectively.
