Week 1 of the college football season has not even kicked off yet, and there is already speculation about the coaching carousel. One of the coaches potentially on the hot seat is Baylor coach Dave Aranda. Baylor fans were hoping Aranda would be fired last year, but he is still on the job. Meanwhile, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel could be a hot name if he decides to move on from Tennessee.
Now, Bruce Feldman of The Athletic is connecting those dots if Aranda is let go.
“Another possible scenario we’ve heard is if Baylor comes open, would the Bears make a move to bring Tennessee’s Josh Heupel back to the Southwest? Heupel did a really good job dragging the Vols out of a big ditch and into the Playoff in 2024, but if the former Oklahoma quarterback has another 8-5 type of year, does he look for a reset in a Power 4 conference that isn’t as loaded as the SEC?” Feldman wrote.

If Heupel does move on from Tennessee and takes another job, the question of who replaces Heupel becomes big. One thought is that Jason Witten, the current Oklahoma Tight End coach, could return to his alma mater.
“The Dallas Cowboys great, who had spent five years as a Texas high school coach and won two state titles, has made a huge impact behind the scenes at OU since joining the Sooners staff in January. If OU takes a big jump forward on offense, Arbuckle won’t be the only Oklahoma assistant who folks end up buzzing about,
Feldman wrote. “The 44-year-old Witten has made a big difference in transforming the Sooners tight ends. Witten, a former Tennessee great, is a name to remember if UT ends up with a coaching search down the road.”
All of this becomes moot if Aranda can turn Baylor around this year. That starts with a win in Week 1, as Baylor faces off with Auburn.
