Texas announces date changes for four non-conference games

With the NCAA FBS Oversight Committee approving changes to the college football calendar starting in 2027 by making “Week Zero” the new start to the season, on Thursday the Texas Longhorns announced date changes for four non-conference games over the next two seasons.

The most notable change for next season, forecast by Michigan and Eastern Michigan rescheduling their non-conference matchup, is Texas hosting new head coach Kyle Whittingham’s program on September 4 instead of September 11 in the long-awaited return trip of the home-and-home series originally scheduled in 2014.

It’s the first-ever meeting between the two program in Austin with the Longhorns holding a 3-0 all-time record against the Wolverines following the 41-27 Citrus Bowl win to close out the 2025 season.

The 2027 season opener against New Mexico State is now moving to the week formerly designated as Week Zero, as the Longhorns host the Aggies on August 28, and the final non-conference game against UTEP is now on September 11.

In 2028, Texas will open the season against Louisiana Tech in Austin on August 26.

Notably missing from the schedule changes are the other two-non conference matchups that season — the future schedules page on the school’s website still lists the first game of the home-and-home series against Notre Dame in South Bend for September 9 and a home tilt against UTSA on September 16. The series against the Fighting Irish has been in jeopardy since the Longhorns missed the College Football Playoff last year despite three wins over top-10 opponents.
