Wisconsin's Luke Fickell revisits past history with Marcus Freeman

It can be easy to forget how often several of the game’s top coaches rub shoulders with one another at different stops.

Looking at it from a 30,000 ft point of view, you can draw hundreds of lines from head coach to head coach across the nation who have worked with one another. For Wisconsin Badgers head coach Luke Fickell, this Sunday at Lambeau Field, he will be squaring off against one of his former pupils, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.

Freeman served as Fickell’s defensive coordinator from 2017 until 2021 at Cincinnati. Freeman made the move to the Fighting Irish, where he worked his way up from defensive coordinator to head coach, a move that happened after Brian Kelly jumped ship to LSU.

Fickell said he's not surprised Freeman has had this much success at Notre Dame, "The unique thing is they find their way to create the things that make them even better."Since becoming top dog at Notre Dame, Freeman has notched a 43-12 which included a 2024 CFP Championship appearance. Remember, Fickell is just 17-21 since taking over the Badgers football program.
