This season will be the most telling of Marcel Reed’s career. He has shown he can make plays in big moments, but now he must prove he can deliver big games late in the year, especially against Texas A&M’s biggest rival.

For two straight seasons, the Texas Longhorns have crushed the Aggies’ hopes of reaching the SEC title game. While those losses cannot be placed solely on Reed, it’s fair to say he didn’t play his best football in those matchups. Across both games, he totaled just 460 yards, zero touchdowns, and three interceptions. For a quarterback considered a legitimate dual‑threat weapon, those numbers simply aren’t enough.

Reed has acknowledged that he wasn’t good enough in those moments, and it’s become the small cloud that seems to follow him. The second major criticism he’s faced is his inconsistency with the deep ball. If you rewind the tape from last season, he very realistically could have produced two 1,000‑yard receivers in Mario Craver and KC Concepcion had he connected on even half of the missed vertical shots.

What you cannot deny is Reed’s work ethic and how badly he wants to win. Last year came with a built‑in explanation it was his first season as the full‑time starter, and there was always going to be a learning curve. Even so, he performed extremely well for most of the year and earned the full trust of his teammates and coaches.

Now, in 2026, he’s on a mission. Reed has spent the offseason working with the best, including quarterback coach Jeff Christensen, who has offered nothing but high praise for Reed’s growth, maturity, and commitment. You can see it in their training sessions. Reed is attacking every weakness, every detail, every throw.

If he puts it all together accuracy, poise, late‑season execution Texas A&M’s ceiling changes overnight.
