Deion Sanders roasts Colorado football critics after dominant rushing performance

Deion Sanders had a simple response for critics who questioned Colorado’s size after the Buffaloes opened the 2026 CFB season with a win. Colorado rushed for 183 yards in its 14-13 victory over Georgia Tech, while the Yellow Jackets managed only 51 rushing yards.

The numbers gave Sanders an opening to mock the narrative surrounding his team. During his press conference, Sanders sarcastically addressed those who called the Buffaloes too small.

“ Oh! We rushed for 183 [yards], my god. They rushed for 51… I thought we were small,” Sanders said with a laugh.

The comments came after a College Sports Page on X highlighted Colorado’s perceived lack of size earlier in August. The post claimed the Buffaloes had 11 players listed at 5-foot-9 or shorter, including one defensive back weighing 140 pounds.

Colorado offensive coordinator Brennan Marion also pushed back against the criticism before the season.

“As the kids would say, pull up. We’re small, we’re this, we’re that…. At some point you gotta spot the ball and see,” Marion said.

Colorado Buffaloes’ ground game makes its point

The Buffaloes’ rushing numbers against Georgia Tech offered a strong answer to the criticism. Micah Welch led Colorado with 58 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Damian Henderson II added 65 yards on 12 attempts.

The production also gives Colorado reason to believe its running game can become a major part of the offense. The program had gone seven seasons without a 1,000-yard rusher, but Welch and Henderson provide Sanders with two promising options.

Colorado needed that physical production in Atlanta. Freshman quarterback Julian Lewis struggled early before leading the late comeback, finishing 14-of-27 for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Lewis found tight end Charlie Williams for a 20-yard touchdown with 42 seconds remaining. Boo Carter then blocked Georgia Tech’s potential game-winning field goal as time expired.

Sanders was proud of his players for maintaining belief throughout the contest. The Buffaloes now turn their attention to Weber State, which visits Colorado on Sept. 12.
