The SEC vs. LSU fight has heated up considerably Thursday: a Louisiana state judge ruled that former professional athletes who have sued to get a fifth year of college competition can play.
This has infuriated the rest of the SEC, which filed a suit of its own in federal court on Thursday. According to ESPN, the “SEC sued LSU in U.S. District Court in Alabama on Thursday, alleging the university is violating the league’s First Amendment right of expressive association by ignoring SEC rules that prohibit signing and playing former NFL players.”
The SEC seems to be entirely united against LSU at this point. According to ASeaofBlue.com, quoting Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, the SEC is considering “boycotting games against the Tigers, placing the school on probation, filing a federal legal challenge, and even kicking LSU out of the SEC.”
LSU opens on Saturday at home against Clemson, where Dabo Swinney, who has struggled a bit lately because he won’t compromise on certain principles. It’s an interesting matchup in that sense.
In some conciliatory comments, new LSU coach Lane Kiffin claims he hasn’t yet violated any SEC rules, but if this X poster is right, now he can’t remove the former professional players from his roster without risking contempt of court.
Whatever happens between now and then, LSU won’t face an SEC team until September 19, when Lane Kiffin takes his team to Ole Miss, which, assuming the Rebels don’t boycott the game, should be interesting: Kiffin, of course, left Ole Miss before the football playoffs last season, and is basically persona non grata in the state of Mississippi.
We have no idea where this is heading, and it’s hard to tell which outcome would be more entertaining: LSU beating Clemson Saturday or the ACC Tigers beat LSU on the road.
And by Friday, we’d expect the federal court to have a ruling as well, so stay tuned.
