The UConn Huskies are ready to get the 2026 season underway. They even have made their starting quarterback official with Kalieb Osborne embracing the role.
UConn gears up for a new era under head coach Jason Candle, who spent 11 seasons with the Toledo Rockets. He replaces Jim Mora, who represented the Huskies for four seasons before starting a new chapter with the Colorado State Rams.
It is reasonable for Candle to rely on a familiar face, which Osborne fits the bill. With the regular season starting, the head coach has placed his trust in Osborne leading the offense ahead of the opener.

“UConn will start Kalieb Osborne at quarterback. He’s a transfer from Toledo who has thrown for 427 yards and three touchdowns in his career. He’ll be first-year coach Jason Candle’s first starter at UConn, as they open with Lafayette,” college football insider Pete Thamel wrote.
What lies ahead for UConn after Kalieb Osborne decision
It’s a big decision for the UConn Huskies to start a new era with a different head coach. Considering Jason Handle’s success at Toledo, fans can have optimism about his choice to start Kalieb Osborne at quarterback.
Osborne played two seasons at Toledo and appeared in seven games in 2025. He finished the season 32 of 52 passing for 427 yards and three touchdowns. He started the Rockets bowl game against Louisville in December, completing 17 of 28 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown and ran it 18 times for 77 yards. On the season, he had 282 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
UConn is coming off a strong 2025 campaign in their last season with Jim Mora at the helm. They finished with a 9-4 record, securing bowl eligibility in convincing fashion. However, they ended the season with a 41-16 loss to the Army Knights in the Fenway Bowl.
The Huskies will get their 2026 campaign underway at home. They host the Lafayette Leopards as kickoff commences on Sept. 5 at 12 p.m. ET.
