Lane Kiffin, LSU help unite ‘College GameDay’ crew in support of Protect College Sports Act

“College GameDay” was in Baton Rogue in Week 1 ahead of LSU’s home opener against Clemson. Lane Kiffin and the Tigers have been one of the biggest stories of the offseason for a number of reasons. Up until last night they were considering playing two players who had signed with NFL teams, but decided to return to college after they were cut.
While LSU is keeping two roster spots open for them, they’re holding off for now. On GameDay, the crew was hopeful that congress would pass the Protect College Sports Act and provide some clarity about what is and isn’t allowed in college football. Specifically, in this case, at LSU.
Nick Saban, who will star in an ad for the bill alongside Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, led the conversation.

“When you look at all this it’s crazy,” said Saban. “I mean, five or ten years ago would we ever think that a NFL player could come back and play in college. I mean, it’s absolutely crazy. But the transferring is out of control. How does it affect graduation rates and all the other things? So I’m a big proponent the Protect College Sports Act. I think it puts some guardrails and gives us an opportunity for leadership that can implement some rules that would control transferring. Five years of eligibility. A little bit of control of the cap in terms of how much the players can make.”
Saban said it was “80 percent good,” with McAfee agreeing and insisting that it’s better than nothing. Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit also agreed that something needed to be done quickly.

When will they vote on Protect College Sports Act?
The bill was expected to be debated in a couple weeks, but Speaker Mike Johnson just decided that Congress was canceling work the last two weeks of September and they are already off through the entire month of October and then the first week of November. So it doesn’t sound like they’re even going to discuss this bill until after LSU takes on Alabama in Week 10.
That’s why McAfee put out a call to action saying, “Hey, DC! I know you guys just went to recess or something. Okay? I hope you’re playing on the monkey bars and all that type of stuff. Let’s get to work to save college sports.”
If only Congress was as McAfee-focused as ESPN.
