Clemson's Christopher Vizzina is Under Most Pressure in the Country

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney waited until nearly the last minute to officially name his starting quarterback, and while everyone assumed it was going to be Christopher Vizzina all along, Swinney was never all that comfortable with it.

Vizzina got a serious push from true freshman Tait Reynolds in fall camp, which either says a lot about Vizzina or a lot about Reynolds.

When Vizzina arrived at Clemson as a four-star commit in 2023, the general expectation was that he would eventually succeed Cade Klubnik.

Well, now he is getting that chance, and you would be hard-pressed to find a single player in the country under more pressure than Vizzina heading into Clemson's season opener against LSU on Saturday night.

Swinney has made it abundantly clear that Vizzina's job is not safe. He went as far to say that the quarterback competition is still ongoing as we proceed into Week 1. That indicates that if Vizzina has a pedestrian showing early, Swinney might have a quick trigger finger.

Would Swinney bench Vizzina in favor of Reynolds as early as Saturday evening? You wouldn't think so, but Swinney has certainly left open the possibility.

Perhaps that's by design to light a fire under Vizzina and bring out the best in him, but it could also backfire if the burden becomes too overwhelming.

Vizzina seems like he can handle it. He knew his job — and perhaps even his collegiate career — was on the line this summer, and he was certainly impressive in holding off Reynolds and calmly managing the rocky waters.

But trotting into Tiger Stadium under the bright lights of prime time is a different animal.

LSU rarely loses night games at home, and the SEC squad is a 10.5-point favorite over Clemson going into the contest.

Lane Kiffin stocked LSU's roster with talent on both sides of the ball during the offseason, and while Clemson is pretty talented itself, the general consensus is that LSU has the more loaded group.

But that might not matter to Swinney.

It's obvious that he likes Reynolds a heck of a lot. The youngster has a big arm, is very athletic and has handled himself like an elder statesman since arriving at Clemson.

Surely, Vizzina knows that. He understands that any slip-ups could ultimately cost him his spot under center.

For a quarterback who certainly has NFL aspirations, it's hard to imagine a more pressure-packed situation going into his debut campaign as a starter.
