Michigan football started off its 2026 season with a thrilling 13-12 win over Western Michigan on Saturday night, the first win of the Kyle Whittingham era in Ann Arbor. The game ended in controversial fashion as Michigan was given an extra second on the clock that led to a JJ Buchanan catching a Hail Mary touchdown from Bryce Underwood and a storming of the field at Michigan Stadium.
The game marked the 330th consecutive crowd of over 100,000 people in attendance for the Wolverines and led to a field-storming of epic proportions after Buchanan’s miraculous touchdown catch. The Michigan marching band played the team’s familiar ‘Hail to the Victors’ fight song as fans converged near the end zone, and Underwood celebrated with a sigh of relief after he erased the 2025 MAC champions’ 12-7 lead for good.

Whittingham shook his head while talking to Western Michigan coach Lance Taylor, a former Nick Saban graduate assistant, after the game, appearing to indicate that he didn’t believe an extra second should have been put back on the clock.
Taylor took the high road after the game, saying that he would let the MAC’s commissioner handle the situation and would likely watch the TV replay on Saturday night.
Michigan moved to 9-0 all-time and 38-1 against MAC teams, with the lone loss coming in October 2008 against the Toledo Rockets. The Wolverines outgained the visiting Broncos 276 yards to 221 yards, 170 of them coming through the air, including 47 yards on the game-winning catch from Buchanan.
September 12 is a bigger challenge with last year’s College Football Playoff participant Oklahoma headed to Ann Arbor for a noon ET kickoff. Whittingham’s team will almost certainly be an underdog against coach Brent Venables’ Sooners after getting blown out in Norman, Oklahoma, last year and the team’s shaky Week 1 performance against the Broncos.
