GREEN BAY – Wisconsin football will begin the 2026 season in a unique venue, with unique alternate uniforms and against a uniquely challenging opponent.

The Badgers will take on Notre Dame – the No. 5 team in the US LBM Coaches Poll – at Lambeau Field in Green Bay on Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. It is the second part of a two-game series, with the other game being a 41-13 loss to the Fighting Irish in 2021 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

The Wisconsin-Notre Dame game will give fans their first glimpse of Colton Joseph in a UW uniform. Here are three quick things to know about the Badgers' 2026 starting quarterback:

  • Joseph transferred from Old Dominion, where he accumulated 2,624 passing yards and 1,007 rushing yards on an offense that ranked 29th nationally with 32 points per game.
  • Joseph's mobility was on display when he had a 78 and 75-yard touchdown runs in the Monarchs' 2025 season opener against then-No. 19 Indiana.
  • He was a three-star recruit out of Newport Harbor High School in California. He chose Old Dominion over scholarship offers from Air Force, Army and Navy. He did not have any scholarship offers from power-conference programs.

Our predictions for Wisconsin vs Notre Dame game at Lambeau Field

04:29 PM ET, September 6 2026, John Steppe

John Steppe

A Wisconsin team with 34 transfers is getting thrown into the deep end of the pool against an experienced Notre Dame team that is taking the field for the first time since its 2025 College Football Playoff snub. Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr and cornerback Leonard Moore might be two of the best players that UW faces all season. A few well-timed turnovers could help the Badgers stay competitive for a while, but Notre Dame has the talent on both sides of the ball to potentially leap ahead in little time at Lambeau. Notre Dame 41, Wisconsin 17

This isn’t the week to bet the mortgage on a Wisconsin win. So what does success look like for the Badgers in Week 1? How about a few signs of life from the offense? What about the defense forcing a turnover or two? How about a solid day of special teams? There is a lot to be gained Sunday night regardless of the final score. Notre Dame 31, Wisconsin 14

Will Wisconsin's Kevin Heywood, Emerson Mandell play vs Notre Dame? Badgers pregame injury update

03:56 PM ET, September 6 2026, John Steppe

Wisconsin football began its first game day of the 2026 season with some good news and bad news on the injury front.

Wisconsin right tackle Kevin Heywood is expected to play in the Badgers' Week 1 game against Notre Dame, according to a report by ESPN's Pete Thamel, but right guard Emerson Mandell is not expected to miss the Week 1 game.

Stylz Blackmon, a Division II transfer, is likely to start in place of Mandell. If Heywood does not play the entire game, Lucas Simmons-Johansson would be the most likely candidate for any playing time at right tackle.
