No. 4 Notre Dame begins its latest quest for a championship with a trip to Wisconsin, where the pair will play at the iconic Lambeau Field. The fixture is being played as part of Notre Dame’s Shamrock Series and was supposed to be played in 2020 before COVID-19 meant the matchup had to be postponed.
The Fighting Irish will have the designated ‘home’ status for this clash even though it’s technically taking place on neutral soil. That being said, expect Wisconsin to have a thrall of support as fourth-year head coach Luke Fickell hopes to spring an upset and give the Badgers a boost in their bid to improve on last year’s 4-8 run.
Marcus Freeman has redemption on his mind after missing out on a place in the CFP last season despite a 10-2 record, one year after finishing as national runners-up to Ohio State. The Fighting Irish have finished with double-digit win in the last three of four seasons under Freeman to date and are among the leading picks to get their hands on the title coming into 2026.
Wisconsin has been sub-standard under Fickell to date and gone 9-15 over the course of his first two campaigns, losing a number of key names to the transfer portal this off-season. However, Green Bay could prove a good luck charm of sorts considering the Badgers beat LSU 16-14 at Lambeau the last time they played here a decade ago.
Notre Dame waltzed to a 41-13 win the last time these teams faced off in 2021, which was at the time their first meeting in almost 60 years. Quarterback CJ Carr is among the pre-season picks for Heisman Trophy honors and will have more pressure placed on his shoulders after star running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price got take in the first round of this year’s Draft.
