Oklahoma impresses state's No. 1 athlete in 2028 recruiting class

There was growing concern that Oklahoma Sooners' scheduled Friday night football game would undermine its high school recruiting efforts. With high school football games traditionally on Friday night, skeptics believed recruits wouldn’t be able to attend the Sooners' home opener.​

But the Sooners' matchup with the UTEP Miners on Friday night didn’t stop the state’s No. 1 athlete in the 2028 class from taking a trip to Norman to experience everything the Sooners and Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium had to offer. No. 10 Oklahoma steamrolled UTEP, completing a 51-0 shutout that not only impressed many Sooner fans but also a top target in the 2028 recruiting class.​

Kamieon Compton-Nero shared on social media that the Sooner staff and management made him feel welcome during his visit. He shared a video of him walking across the field with OU General Manager Jim Nagy as the Sooners warmed up. It also included a picture of him with head coach Brent Venables and safeties coach Brandon Hall.

“Great time in Norman seeing (Oklahoma football) dominate last night.” Compton-Nero wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Grateful for all the time with (Coach Brent Venables, Coach Brandon Hall, Jim Nagy, Molly Jacoby) making me feel at home and continuing to show me how OU is a great fit for me to make an immediate impact and continue my development on and off the field.”

Compton-Nero is a consensus top 100 prospect in the nation, coming in at No. 53 per 247Sports, No. 52 per Rivals, and at No. 36 in the nation according to ESPN. As a four-star recruit out of Owasso (OK) High School, he holds 20 Power Four offers, including 11 from SEC and Big Ten schools, as well as Notre Dame.

Compton-Nero is a 6-foot-3, 187-pound do-it-all player. Just last year, he played safety and quarterback for Rejoice Christian, leading them to a Class A-I state championship alongside now OU freshman wide receiver Xavier Okwufulueze. Compton-Nero moved to Owasso High School in the offseason and now primarily focuses on safety and wide receiver — Oklahoma is recruiting him as a safety.

A good sign for the Sooners, Compton-Nero has visited Norman multiple times now, and his relationship with the staff appears to have only improved. Many of the top recruiting experts, including On3’s Steve Wiltfong, Sam Spiegelman, and Josh McCuistion, have all predicted Compton-Nero to land with the Sooners when he ultimately makes his decision.
