Ranking every SEC team entering college football's Week 2

The 2026 college football season is underway, and the SEC wasted little time showing why it remains one of the deepest conferences in the country. All 16 SEC teams took the field in Week 1, giving each program its first chance to turn preseason expectations into on-field results.

For the most part, the opening week didn't drastically alter the outlook of the conference. Every SEC team came away with a victory, meaning there was little reason for major movement throughout our power rankings.

However, not all wins are created equal.

While some teams handled business exactly as expected, others provided more questions than answers despite leaving Week 1 undefeated.

With one week of results now in the books, here's where all 16 SEC teams stand in our latest Gators Wire power rankings.

1. Georgia Bulldogs

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 63-3 victory over Tennessee State Tigers
  • Up Next: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

The No. 1 remains the Georgia Bulldogs. The back-to-back SEC champions handled business in their season opener against the inferior Tennessee State Tigers, allowing only three points total in their victory. They disrupted everything that the Tigers threw at them, showing complete domination through every facet of the game.

2. Texas Longhorns

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 59-7 victory over Texas State Bobcats
  • Up Next: Ohio State Buckeyes

Texas will enter Week 2 as the No. 2 team in our power rankings. After finishing the season, how he did in 2025, Arch Manning looked every bit of an NFL quarterback. The Junior quarterback threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns on a 74% completion percentage.

The Longhorn offense was humming on Saturday with elite efficiency. They converted on over 70% of their third downs and converted all of their fourth-down attempts in their victory. They face a tall task in Week 2 as they face the Ohio State Buckeyes.

3. LSU

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 51-10 victory over Clemson Tigers
  • Up Next: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

LSU makes the biggest jump this week, going from No. 6 to No. 3. The Tigers sent a message in Lane Kiffin's first game as head coach of the program. They played the game at their pace and dominated on the ground. LSU finished the game with 309 total rushing yards, with 113 of them coming from their starting quarterback, Sam Leavitt.

Having that dynamic dual-threat ability will make them a formidable team in the SEC and a potential title contender.

4. Oklahoma Sooners

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0SEC)
  • Result: 59-0 victory over Texas-El Paso Miners
  • Up Next: Michigan Wolverines

Oklahoma falls to No. 4 entering Week 2 despite opening the season with a dominant 59-0 victory over UTEP. The Sooners did exactly what a top SEC team should do against an inferior opponent, controlling the game from start to finish and never allowing the Miners to find any sort of rhythm.

The shutout was particularly impressive and continues to show why Brent Venable is elite at scheming defenses. While there are still questions that need to be answered against higher-level competition, the Sooners handled their business in Week 1 and gave us little reason to move them from their preseason position.

That will change quickly in Week 2, however, as Oklahoma travels to take on the Michigan Wolverines in what will be its first real test of the season.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

  • 2025Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 48-10 victory over East Carolina Pirates
  • Up Next: Kentucky Wildcats

Alabama drops one spot to No. 5 following a 48-10 victory over East Carolina. The Crimson Tide controlled the game throughout and showed the type of depth and talent that has become expected from the program.

There were few reasons to be concerned with Alabama's opening performance, although East Carolina did manage to put 10 points on the board. The Crimson Tide will need to clean up any inconsistencies in the secondary before entering SEC play, but there was enough in Week 1 from Keelon Russell and Co. to remain among the conference's elite.

6. Texas A&M Aggies

  • 2025Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 50-0 victory over Missouri State Bears
  • Up Next: Arizona State Sun Devils

Texas A&M moves into the No. 6 spot after a shutout performance in Week 1. The Aggies put together a complete performance on both sides of the ball.

The Aggies never allowed Missouri State to make the game competitive, and the defense deserves plenty of credit for pitching a shutout. At the same time, Marcel Reed and the offense consistently put points on the board without turning the ball over, showing why Texas A&M could be a dangerous team in the SEC this season.

7. Ole Miss Rebels

  • 2025Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Record: 41-38 victory over Louisville Cardinals
  • Up Next: Charlotte 49ers

Ole Miss remains at No. 7, but the Rebels certainly made things interesting in their season opener. They escaped Louisville with a 41-38 victory in a game that showed the Cardinals' potential as one of the ACC's top teams and may have exposed questions surrounding the Rebels.

There were plenty of positives, particularly from quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who accounted for four touchdowns and helped lead the Rebels' offense against a talented Louisville defense. Chambliss' performance may be one that propels him into award-winning conversations.

Deuce Alexander also emerged as a major weapon with 159 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

However, allowing 38 points and needing a last-second field goal to secure the victory is far from ideal for a team with College Football Playoff aspirations. Ole Miss gets Charlotte in Week 2, giving the Rebels an opportunity to clean up some of those issues before the schedule gets more difficult.

8. Florida Gators

  • 2025Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 66-21 victory over Florida Atlantic Owls
  • Up Next: Campbell Fighting Camels

Florida remains at No. 8 after opening the season with a dominant 66-21 victory over Florida Atlantic. The Gators' offense looked every bit as explosive as advertised, while quarterback Aaron Philo immediately showed why there is plenty of optimism surrounding him entering his first season as Florida's starter.

Philo threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground, while running back Jadan Baugh exploded for 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Vernell Brown III also surpassed 100 receiving yards, giving the Gators several different ways to attack opposing defenses.

The biggest concern was Florida's defense, which allowed 21 points and gave up more yardage than expected against FAU.

9. Missouri Tigers

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 54-14 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions
  • Up Next: Kansas Jayhawks

Missouri stays at No. 9 after taking care of business against Arkansas-Pine Bluff with a 54-14 victory. The Tigers controlled the game from the opening whistle and never allowed their opponent to seriously threaten them.

The offense was surgical in the first half with Austin Simmons under center, completing 89% of his passes and throwing for four touchdowns.

The defense also did its part by limiting Arkansas-Pine Bluff to just 14 points. It was the type of performance Missouri needed to open the season.

10. South Carolina Gamecocks

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 57-0 victory over Kent State Golden Flashes
  • Up Next: Towson Tigers

South Carolina stays at No. 10 after completely dismantling Kent State, 57-0. This performance was everything you want to see out of LaNorris Sellers. He was quick, decisive, efficient, and made very few mistakes in the victory.

A performance like this doesn't necessarily tell us everything we need to know about the team, but it showed us that they can play mistake-free football and that can go a long way in the SEC.

The challenge now is maintaining that level of execution against better competition.

11. Tennessee Volunteers

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 56-9 victory over Furman Paladins
  • Up Next: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Tennessee jumps to No. 11 following a 56-9 victory over Furman. The Volunteers took care of business against an inferior opponent while scoring consistently against the Paladins.

There wasn't much to criticize from Tennessee's opening performance, although the Volunteers still have plenty to prove before they can be considered among the SEC's elite. Their offense and defense were essentially perfect in the win, recording over 600 yards of offense and seven sacks, showing that they aren't one dimensional.

Tennessee faces Georgia Tech in Week 2, giving the Volunteers their first chance to show how they stack up against a quality opponent.

12. Mississippi State Bulldogs

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 62-13 victory over Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks
  • Up Next: Minnesota Golden Gophers

Mississippi State moves up to No. 12 after an impressive 62-13 victory over Louisiana-Monroe. The Bulldogs were one of the SEC's highest-scoring teams in Week 1 and showed plenty of offensive firepower throughout the afternoon.

Mississippi State also deserves credit for putting the game away early rather than allowing ULM to hang around. The Bulldogs looked like a team capable of exceeding expectations this season.

A test comes in Week 2, when Mississippi State welcomes Minnesota. That matchup should provide a much clearer indication of whether the Bulldogs belong higher in these rankings or are simply taking advantage of a favorable opening schedule.

13. Auburn Tigers

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 17-16 victory over Baylor Bears
  • Up Next: Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles

Auburn drops to No. 13 after barely escaping Baylor with a 17-16 victory. While the Tigers technically opened the season with a win, the performance was concerning enough to warrant movement down the rankings.

Auburn struggled to create separation against Baylor and needed to survive until the final moments to secure the victory. For a program hoping to compete near the top of the SEC, that simply isn't the type of performance that inspires much confidence.

14. Kentucky Wildcats

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 45-13 victory over Youngstown State Penguins
  • Up Next: Alabama Crimson Tide

Kentucky rises to one spot to No. 14 after opening the season with a 45-13 victory over Youngstown State. The Wildcats did what they needed to do against an inferior opponent, putting together a comfortable victory and avoiding any major concerns in the process.

However, Kentucky's placement near the bottom of the SEC isn't necessarily a reflection of its Week 1 performance. The Wildcats simply haven't done enough yet to move ahead of the teams ranked above them, particularly with the level of competition they faced in the opener.

That could change quickly in Week 2. Kentucky will travel to take on Alabama, giving the Wildcats a chance at an early-season upset.

15. Vanderbilt Commodores

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 28-9 victory over Austin Peay Governors
  • Up Next: Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens

Vanderbilt falls to No. 15 after defeating Austin Peay, 28-9, in its season opener. The Commodores got the win, but their performance wasn't nearly as convincing as some of the other teams in the bottom half of the SEC.

Vanderbilt's defense did a solid job of limiting Austin Peay to nine points, but the offense struggled at times to consistently put the game away. Against better competition, the Commodores will need to find more explosiveness and efficiency on that side of the ball.

Still, a win is a win.

16. Arkansas Razorbacks

  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Result: 31-14 victory over North Alabama Lions
  • Up Next: Utah Utes

Arkansas remains at No. 16 despite opening the season with a 31-14 victory over North Alabama. The Razorbacks got the result they needed, but the performance doesn't move the needle.

With the SEC featuring several teams that looked dominant in Week 1, the Razorbacks need to show considerably more before they can make a case to move up.

For Arkansas, Week 2 provides a much better opportunity to do exactly that. The Razorbacks will face Utah, giving them a chance to make an early statement against a quality opponent and potentially change the perception surrounding the program.
