SEC program 'currently leads' for key FSU commit

The FSU Seminoles currently have a commitment from four-star athlete Za'Kari Johnson, but one expert no longer believes they are the top school in his recruitment.

Johnson, who is from Opa Locka, Florida, visited the Texas A&M Aggies this weekend for their season opener against the Missouri State Bears, and Steve Wiltfong of Rivals thinks they are now the leader in his recruitment.

"There is no question Texas A&M currently leads. Moving forward both sides will continue to grow the relationship," he wrote.

Johnson committed to FSU back in July and is one of their most important commitments. He is ranked as the No. 296 overall player and No. 9 athlete in the Rivals industry ranking. He is also the No. 27 player from Florida. He is FSU's fourth-highest-rated commit and the top one from Florida.

While listed as an athlete, the 6-foot-1, 175-pounder is expected to play defensive back at the next level. The Seminoles will fight to hold onto Johnson, but Texas A&M has done a great job recruiting the Sunshine State in the 2027 recruiting cycle. Five of the state's top eight players are committed to the Aggies, including five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews and five-star linebacker Kaden Hederson, both of whom were FSU targets earlier in their recruitments.

With the Aggies surging, FSU's coaching staff needs to do everything to try and retake the momentum in Johnson's recruitment. They will have a chance to do that on Monday when they host the No. 19 SMU Mustangs in their first ACC game of the season.
