Freshman running back Corey Watkins Jr. ran for three touchdowns and sophomore back Jayson Grant added another as the Bakersfield College football team put together a 28-14 non-conference road victory over Allan Hancock on Saturday in Santa Maria.
The victory moved the Renegades to 2-0 on the season and marked the second straight week in which the defense held its opponent to 14 points. BC opened its 100th season as a program with a 40-14 win over Santa Ana on Aug. 29.
Watkins only picked up 64 yards on 10 carries, but three went for touchdown runs of 7, 4 and 5 yards. His TD run of 4 yards gave BC a 21-7 halftime lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Grant’s score was a 12-yard run in the first quarter.
Hancock’s touchdowns came in the second quarter, a 25-yard-run by Trevin Young and then Tyson Scott from two yards out and with only 14 seconds left in the game.
Hancock (1-1) outgained BC on offense, 374-298, but the Bulldogs were ultra heavy on the run game with 289 yards. Scott led Hancock with 12 carries for 123 yards. BC was balanced with 160 yards on the ground — led by Watkins — and BC quarterback Isaac Woodhouse was 14 of 18 for 138 yards with no interceptions. His top target was Rajhayn Wilson, who caught five passes for 63 yards.
Defensively, BC collected two more interceptions after getting four against Santa Ana. Ethan Eckles had one and Chase Furtado had an interception he returned for 68 yards to the Hancock 12. Grant scored his touchdown on the next play. Furtado, a sophomore defensive back, had six solo tackles and one assisted tackle to lead the defense.
Defensive back Michael Smith Jr. forced a Hancock fumble on its opening drive and Denim Simmons recovered. The turnover led to BC’s first touchdown.
BC had chances to increase the lead but an 84-yard touchdown run by Rajhayn Wilson was nullified by a holding call in the first quarter and Wilson fumbled after a 56-yard gain on a pass play early in the second quarter.
Nonetheless, the Renegades are back at home for a big non-conference test at 6 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Stadium against Ventura (1-1). The Pirates are coming off a 33-20 road victory over Fullerton. Saturday’s game is Heroes Night, a chance to honor local first responders and to have a remembrance of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy.
