Things aren’t going well right now for Florida State football head coach Mike Norvell. Not only did his team lose a game on Monday to SMU, but Norvell is also getting booed by fans.

“They just played a video of Mike Norvell announcing that the Marching Chiefs would be in the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. The crowd booed Norvell. (It did cheer for the band.),” On3 reported on X, formerly Twitter.

At least one college football insider made note of how bad that situation looks for Norvell.

“This is really ugly and honestly when the inevitable happens it will probably feel merciful,” Yahoo Sports writer Dan Wolken posted to X.

Norvell’s seat is on fire at Florida State. His team has struggled since it was snubbed in 2023 from the College Football Playoff. Florida State underachieved in 2024 and 2025, and Seminoles fans want the team to reach the CFP this season.

Following a loss to SMU Monday, those chances got slimmer. Florida State allowed 585 yards of offense to the Mustangs. Florida State football bowed to SMU, 27-24.

“I thought our guys did battle. I thought we were able to create takeaways. It’s something that we knew going into the game, it was going to be a big factor. Unfortunately, we only had seven points off takeaways, which, when you get four turnovers, you need to be able to put points on the board in those situations,” Norvell said postgame, per USA Today.

SMU torched Florida State through the air. Mustangs quarterback Kevin Jennings threw for 430 passing yards, and three touchdowns. SMU averaged more than eight yards per play in the contest.

Things get no easier for Norvell. His Florida State squad next plays SEC power Alabama, on September 19.
