Memphis bowl projections after week 1

After starting the season a week early in week zero, Memphis enters week two with a 2-0 record and a massive game on Saturday against Boise State. Charles Huff’s team is one of three teams in the country who started the year 2-0, and it looks like they’re well on their way to making a 13th straight bowl game this season.

ESPN, CBS Sports and On3 released updated bowl predictions following week 1 results, and most of the predictions put the Tigers playing in one of two bowl games in Frisco, Texas. The Frisco Football Classic will be played at The Star in Frisco, while the Frisco Bowl will be played at Toyota Stadium, home of FC Dallas.

Here are the predictions for Memphis’ bowl destination after week 1:

ESPN

Bonagura: Frisco Bowl: vs. Syracuse

Schlabach: Frisco Football Classic: vs. Colorado State

Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach both have the Tigers in a bowl game in their most recent bowl predictions story after Bonagura excluded Memphis in the preseason predictions. Both writers predict Huff’s team will play in games in Frisco, but they have the Tigers playing in different bowls.

Bonagura predicts the Tigers will play in the Frisco Bowl against Syracuse, while Schlabach has Memphis playing Colorado State in the Frisco Football Classic. The Classic, which is played at The Star, would matchup Huff’s team in a game against another Group of Six team, and Bonagura thinks the Tigers will play another Mountain West opponent.

Schlabach predicts Memphis will play against Syracuse in the Frisco Bowl, which is played at Toyota Stadium. The Frisco Bowl is played later in the bowl schedule, and it would give the Tigers an opportunity to play another Power Four program.

Frisco Classic: vs. New Mexico

CBS Sports also predicts Memphis will play in the Frisco Classic, but it predicts Huff’s team will be matched up against New Mexico. The Lobos were viewed as a G6 dark horse ahead of the season, but starting quarterback Jack Layne suffered a season-ending injury ahead of the season.

Even without their starting QB, New Mexico kicked off the season with a 38-7 win over Central Michigan.

The Tigers have played one game against the Lobos in program history, and they lost 20-13 in 1986.

Fenway Bowl: vs. Florida State

On3’s Brett McMurphy is the only person from the three outlets that predict the Tigers will play in a bowl game based outside of Frisco, Texas, and he thinks Huff’s team will play in the Fenway Bowl against Florida State. 

The Fenway Bowl has been a popular prediction for Memphis over the last few years, but they have yet to play in the bowl game. 

The Tigers played Florida State in Tallahassee in 2024, beating them 20-12, but that’ the first time they’ve played the Seminoles since 1990. It will be interesting to see what Florida State looks like at the end of the season with a lot of talk surrounding former Tiger coach Mike Norvell.
