Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway is not expected to play in the Bears' Week 2 game against Prairie View A&M, per multiple reports.
Lagway injured his ankle in Baylor's 17-16 loss to Auburn last week. He was noticeably hobbling at the end of the first half and had to be carried into the locker room by teammates. He returned to play in the second half with a heavily taped right ankle and finished the game, nearly leading the Bears to a last-minute win, however Baylor's 2-point attempt was stopped inches short of the goal line.
ESPN's Pete Thamel is reporting Nate Bennett will get the start in Lagway's place against the FCS Panthers in Waco on Saturday.
"He's fighting through it. I think some of the running that we had going into the game, we're trying to find where the game plan goes," Baylor coach Dave Aranda said of Lagway's injury at the half. "Throwing-wise, he's stepping into throws, and he's battling through. The guys are seeing him battle through, and they want to achieve for him."
A highly touted transfer from Florida, Lagway managed to put up big numbers against Auburn despite the ankle injury, passing for 333 yards and two touchdowns, but his limited mobility came at a cost with a 50% completion rate (27 of 54).
Bennett, a junior out of Westlake Village, Calif., will be making his first collegiate start. He served as Sawyer Robertson's backup last season for the Bears and complete five passes for 34 yards against Samford. Bennett was a 3-star recruit and ranked the No. 101 quarterback in the 2004 recruiting class by 247Sports.
“I feel really good about Nate and (third stringer Ed Griffin),” Aranda said during his Monday news conference. “We've got guys who have been here, have been invested and know the offense. Each has particular skill sets. We can tweak things, and the offense can go in a different direction to best utilize their talents. That room is special, so we'll see.”
Baylor is a 38.5-point favorite against the Panthers.
