Both Washington and Utah State are looking for something better in Week 2.
That was ugly, Part 1: Washington was dealing with a rivalry game against Washington State, but it didn’t look crisp in any way, needing a big fourth quarter to pull away late in a 24-10 win.
That was ugly, Part 2: There’s bad, and there’s losing 29-17 at home to Idaho State to start the season. Utah State couldn’t stop screwing up, the Bengals kept taking advantage, and the result was one of the worst under-the-radar losses of Week 1.
Washington vs Utah State: Quick Hits
- It’s the third meeting between the two. Washington won 31-17 in 2015 and 53-12 in 1998.
- Washington gets another relatively easy matchup against Eastern Washington next before hosting Minnesota in the Big Ten opener.

Why Utah State Will Win
The Utah State offense worked against Idaho State. The running game wasn’t amazing, but the passing attack moved the ball. Yes, it’s in a “Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?” sort of way, but the four interceptions were bad, the 11 penalties were a killer, and these are things that can be cleaned up.

Chalk up the Washington issues to Week 1. Demond Williams Jr. is a normally accurate passer, and he looked a little rusty. But when it was time to turn it on, the explosion came through in all three phases.
For all of the problems and concerns – like the 12 penalties – there weren’t any turnovers, and the defense didn’t allow a third down conversion.
