So, what can Kalieb Osborne do for an encore?

That is what UConn fans are wondering as the Huskies football team prepares to play Maryland of the Big Ten on Saturday. Both teams
enter 1-0 after wins against FCS opponents in their season openers.

UConn defeated Lafayette 56-7 in Week 1. Maryland topped Hampton
62-0, giving the program victories in 19 consecutive nonconference games. That is the longest streak in the nation.

The Terrapins will be the first of three Power Four
programs – Syracuse and North Carolina are the others – that will meet the
Huskies at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn., this season.

Kickoff time against Maryland is 3:33 p.m.

A large turnout is expected after the opening game against Lafayette drew 31,831 fans. The highest attendance last season came Nov. 8 when 38,106 people filled The Rent to see a win over Duke.

Week 2 for QB1

Osborne played at Toledo last season and transferred
after Jason Candle – the Rockets’ former coach – accepted UConn’s offer to
replace Jim Mora as head coach.

After a competition that lasted the entirety of the
summer, Candle named Osborne his Week 1 starter the night before the opener. And Candle needed to make no such
pronouncement for Week 2.

Osborne guided an offense that gained a
school-record 671 yards. He finished 19-of-26 passing for 265 yards and threw
for two touchdowns. He ran for two more and racked up 90 of UConn’s 301 rushing
yards.

Backup quarterback Tucker McDonald entered late in
the game and was 6-of-7 passing for 105 yards and a TD.

Both UConn QBs threw an interception.

And the opposing quarterback…

Malik Washington, a sophomore, is in his second
season as Maryland’s starting quarterback. The 6-foot-5, 231-pound Washington
set a school record for completions (273) by a freshman, gained 2,963 yards and
threw for 17 touchdowns in 2025. He started all 12 games.

In the opener against Hampton, Washington was
19-of-31 passing and threw for 186 yards and a touchdown.

The Terrapins piled up 646 yards (365 rushing, 281
passing).

It looks as if both defenses could have some work to
do on Saturday. Maryland already has unveiled its stifling defense, holding Hampton
to 85 yards of total offense.

UConn vs. the Big Ten

Maryland beat UConn 50-7 on Aug. 31, 2024, in
College Park, Md. It was the first time the schools met since Maryland joined the Big Ten.

The Huskies have a 2-7 all-time record against Big
Ten teams. UConn is 2-1 against Indiana, 0-3 against Michigan, and 0-1 against Illinois,
Maryland and Purdue.

Television:
CBS Sports Network, Jordan Kent will be on the play-by-play call, with Ben
DiNucci and Doug Pederson the analysts. Brandon Baylor will serve as the
sideline reporter.

FM (Hartford) is the flagship station for UConn football. Mike Crispino will
handle the play-by-play, with analyst Wayne Norman and sideline reporter Adam
Giardino on the call.
