‘Refined insanity’: Cast of ‘Why Did I Get Married Again’ cast reveals how Tyler Perry needed less than a week to shoot film

Tyler Perry‘s fast-paced shooting schedule has been well-documented for any actor who has worked on their most recent films and TV shows. “Why Did I Get Married Again” was no exception.
In an interview with BlackTree TV, Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith and Taraji P. Henson each dished on how the third installment in the acclaimed “Why Did I Get Married?” series came together. In true Perry fashion, the filmmaker and director didn’t even need a week to shoot the film in Italy. Ironically, it might have taken the cast longer to reach Italy than actually to film their scenes.
Smith, who starred in the two prior “Why Did I Get Married” films, immediately noticed the difference between working for Perry now and years past.
“We get less days of filming,” she said with a laugh. “When we first did the movie, I think we had three weeks or something. Then we shot this movie … I don’t know if I can say it out loud. Four days. Which is insane.”
“Refined insanity,” Leal chimed in.
Smith admitted that Perry’s unusual shooting schedule differs from that of other directors, but gave some insight into how things move at Tyler Perry Studios. “He knows what he wants. And he’s a technician at what he does. He knows exactly what’s going on. He knows exactly what he has, what he doesn’t have. The way his mind works and the way his system works … this is my first time experiencing it because I hadn’t worked with him in ten days.”
Henson, who worked with Perry on films including “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” and “The Family That Preys,” noticed things switched when it came to “Acrimony” and “Straw.” Those productions were filmed in five and four days, respectively.
Leal, who hadn’t worked with Perry since the original sequel to “Why Did I Get Married” in 2010, called the rapid-fire shooting process a “foreign feeling” but understood the trust that comes with working with the longtime filmmaker.
