Chicken Little did not need to run through the Oregon football locker room after last Saturday’s scare versus Boise State, but he probably rushed over to Stillwater when he saw the Ducks wobble against an Oklahoma State squad that lost to Tulsa by two touchdowns in its season opener. It is time to panic in Eugene.
Dan Lanning’s squad went into halftime down 24-17, once again looking far less than the national championship contender it has been for the last few years. A shaky Week 1 outing can happen, but when issues persist it becomes harder to deny that there are legitimate problems. The media was all over this eye-opening performance.
“Oklahoma State has 350 yards of offense on Oregon before halftime,” Chris Vannini of The Athletic plainly stated on X. “Oklahoma State put up 170 yards in the first quarter vs. Oregon,” ESPN’s Max Olson noted. “That’s the most Oregon’s defense has allowed in an opening quarter since the Rose Bowl loss to Ohio State. And yet the Ducks lead 7-3.”

“Surprising QB comparison at halftime of Oregon/Ok State: Dante Moore: 5/15, 45 yds, 0 TD, 0 INT (multiple drops by his WR) {vs.} Drew Mestemaker: 14/20, 179 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT (both tipped), 89 rush yds,” The Athletic’s Dane Brugler posted.
“I didn’t overreact to the Boise game, but I think we can officially put Oregon’s defense on notice,” Stewart Mandel of The Athletic remarked. “Ok St averaging 8.9 YPP over its first 23 plays.”
These reporters are not really sharing their opinions. They are merely sharing the facts, which happen to paint a troubling picture. Oregon football is leaving the public little choice but to sound the alarms.
Dan Lanning has established himself as one of the best young head coaches in the sport. Dante Moore is a Heisman Trophy contender who already has a year of high-level college football under his belt. The defensive line is loaded with talent and experience. And yet, the Ducks are just trying to survive in Boone Pickens Stadium. Even if Oregon finds a way to escape a devastating loss, this uninspiring showing already speaks volumes.
But it is much easier to address glaring concerns with a 2-0 record. The Ducks trailed the Cowboys 30-24 after three quarters of play.
